A ladies silk scarf commemorating the victory of Merry Hampton in the 1887 Derby, with central portrait of Mr Abington's colt with John Watts up, surrounded by vignettes with printed details of winners since 1780, yellow border, approx. 84cm. square Merry Hampton was John Watts's first Derby winner. The colt was trained at the Bedford Lodge Stables in Newmarket by Martin Gurry. Lots 10 to 34 Memorabilia relating to the Royal Jockey John Watts (1861-1902) and the jockey Kempton Cannon (1879-1951). The connection between the two jockeys being that Watts's widow married Cannon. Provenance: by family descent. John (Jack as he was usually known) was born on 9th May 1861 at Stockbridge, Hampshire. He became apprenticed to Tom Cannon at Danebury and rode his first winner, Aristocrat (dead-heat), at Salisbury on 25th May 1876. In 1878 Watts moved to Newmarket to work at trainer Richard Marsh’s Lordship Farm stables and from where he would enjoy a highly successful career in the saddle. He rode 20 Classic victories, comprising five wins in the Derby and St Leger, four victories in the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks and two successes in the 2,000 Guineas. Richard Marsh had many important patrons, including the Duke of Hamilton and Lord Rosebery, but none more so than the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). John Watts is perhaps best remembered for his partnership with the Prince of Wales’s colt Persimmon who won the Derby and St Leger in 1896 and many other important races including the Gold Cup at Ascot and the Eclipse Stakes. John Watts retired in 1900 to turn to training. It is said that years of serious wasting to make riding weights caught up with him and his health failed. He collapsed at Sandown Park races on 19th July 1902 and died 10 days later, aged 41. It is reported that his funeral in Newmarket was attended by ‘almost the entire town.’ He was buried in Newmarket cemetery. His two sons - John Evelyn & Harry Alexander (killed in action, WW1) both became jockeys. John won the 1902 Cambridgeshire on Ballantrae. In 1911 his John Watts's widow married the jockey Kempton Cannon, son of Tom of Danebury. Through the family inheritances memorabilia relating to Kempton Cannon forms part of the collection being offered at the auction. Kempton Cannon won three Classic races, the St Leger on Doricles in 1901, and the 2,000 Guineas and Derby double on St. Amant in 1904. Both horses were owned by Mr Leopold de Rothcshild.

George Robert Leftwich (British, 1846-1929) oil painting of the Prince of Wales's racehorse Persimmon, signed and inscribed ‘Newmarket’, portrayed on Newmarket Heath with jockey John Watts up in the Royal Colours, 41 by 52cm., framed, overall 58 by 68cm., tears to canvas, very little in the way of paint loss The Prince of Wales's Persimmon was a bay colt by St Simon out of Perdita II. He won 7 of his 9 races including the Derby, St Leger, Gold Cup at Ascot and Eclipse Stakes. He later became champion sire on four occasions. The best of his progeny was the outsanding filly Sceptre. Persimmon is commemorated by a life-size statue at the Royal Stud at Sandringham. Autographed cricket bat from a Jockeys v Athletes match at The Oval 26th September 1904 presented to the jockey Kempton Cannon, set with a metal shield inscribed PRESENTED TO K. CANNON ESQ., BY R.A. BELL, FOR BEST BATTING PERFORMANCE, JOCKEYS v ATHLETES, KENNINGTON OVAL, 26th SEPTEMBER 1904, the bat bearing 17 signature in ink relating to the match including William Griggs (jockey) C H Jupp (athlete), W Lotinga (athlete), Chaloner (jockey), etc. In 1904 jockey Kempton Cannon had won his most important win with a victory on St Amant in The Derby. He married the widow of another jockey, Jack Watts. He was a son of the Champion Jockey Tom Cannon and is a family antecedent of Lester Piggott. Silver salver presented to the royal jockey Joe Childs in 1935, in the form of a Sheffield silver salver by Mappin & Webb Ltd, 1931, inscribed Presented to JOE CHILDS AS A TOKEN OF ESTEEM from the TRAINERS & JOCKEYS 1935, with twenty-eight engraved signatures of Childs peers, diameter 58cm, approx. 4,900gr. Joe Childs (1884-1958) was a thoroughly successful jockey, wining fifteen classic races including the Ascot Gold Cup no less than four times, the Epsom Derby, 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas three times apiece, St Leger and the Oaks four times apiece, from 1925 to 1935 Childs was first rider to King George V and during WW1 served in a cavalry regiment. A silver box presented to the racehorse trainer Cecil Boyd-Rochfort in 1921, hallmarked Chrichton Bros., London, 1920, from the racehorse owner Marshall Field III, the inside of the hinged lid with engraved hand writing reading: C. B.-R-, FROM M. F., in memory of our first winner - Golden Corn - July-1-1921, 7 by 15cm., weight 626gr. The Cecil Boyd-Rochfort-trained Golden Corn won the Fulbourne Stakes at Newmarket on 1st July 1921 for the American Investment Banker Marshall Field III (1893-1956). The filly would go on to win the prestigious Middle Park Stakes and the July Cup in 1923.

Historic item of horse racing memorabilia: The number cloth from Nijinsky's Triple Crown 1970 St Leger victory, signed by Lester Piggott in fine marker and inscribed NIJINSKY, LEGER 1970, the white cloth with black No.8 Nijinksy remains the last colt to win the English Triple Crown. the 2,000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger. The horse who has come closest to achieving this feat was the Aidan O'Brien-trained Camelot in 2012. Having won the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby Camelot was unable to beat Encke in the St Leger, going down by ¾l. Provenance: Lots 54 to 56. An exceptionally early sporting trophy: a 1701 Irish Horse Racing Trophy, possibly the oldest sporting trophy ever to have been offered at public auction, the auctioneer can find no record of any earlier object, in the form of a silver ½ pint tankard hallmarked Isaac Dighton, London, 1700, engraved with a depiction of a racehorse and jockey, the band beneath the rim inscribed “All ye Course in ye Ryne in Thomond ye 14th of May. This plate was won by ye 3rd horse Anno Domi 1701”, height 10cm., weight 205gr. Provenance: The tankard was once owned by the Westropp Family of Ballysteen House, Ballysteen, Co. Limerick. The River Rine rises in County Clare in Ireland and runs through the village of Quin before reaching the Shannon Estuary. A racecourse was recorded at Quin and it is believed that this is the location where the race was run in 1701. Other early sporting trophies offered at auction would include the 1713 York Gold Cup, a horse racing trophy donated by Queen Anne, sold at Christie's, and now in the Fairfax House Collection in York. Another recorded sale was of a Scottish silver snuff mull presented as a prize for an archery competition at Kilwinning in 1721. The oldest extant sporting trophy, never sold commercially, is the Carlisle Bell (Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery), a horse racing trophy dating to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I in 1559.
