1934 FIFA World Cup winner's medal presented to Ottorino Barassi, President and Secretary of FIGC (Italian F.A.) and Director of the FIFA 1934 World Cup Organising Committee, gold, un hallmarked, designed by the Jules Rimet Trophy creator Abel Lafleur (French, 1875-1953) and signed to the reverse, the obverse with a winged figure of Victory based on the ancient Greek sculpture Nike of Samothrace (Louvre, Paris), inscribed F.I.F.A., the reverse with a fasces symbol and inscribed WORLD'S CUP, ROMA, GIUGNO, 1934, and named to O. BARASSI, 35 x 22mm., weight 12gr. Provenance: Graham Budd Auctions, Sporting Memorabilia including the Ottorino Barassi Collection, 5-6th December 2023, Lot 429. Ottorino Barassi (1898-1971) Italian football and sports official. Just before the 1966 World Cup in England the Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen whilst on display at the Stampex Exhibition in London’s Westminster Central Hall. Very famously, it was found abandoned in shrubbery by a dog called “Pickles” and after the Final Tie HM The Queen was able to present the World Cup trophy to England’s winning captain Bobby Moore. However, this was not the first time the trophy’s survival was at severe risk. During the Second World War, and with Italy as reigning champions, the Jules Rimet Trophy was in a bank vault in Rome. The city was occupied by the Nazis and the Secretary of the FIGC (Italian F.A.), Ottorino Barassi, had the foresight to hide the Rimet in a shoebox under his bed - fearing that if found the solid 18k trophy would have been requisitioned and destined for the melting pot. His house was indeed searched by the Nazis but they did not discover the hiding place. After that episode, Barassi sent the Cup to Foggia, to some relatives, who managed to keep it hidden until the end of hostilities. It was then returned to FIFA for the 1950 World Cup Tournament, where Barassi himself was called to collaborate with the local organisation committee. After the 1970 World Cup, however, the historic trophy had used all its luck. It was stolen again in Brazil, has never been recovered to this day, and is presumed to have been melted down for bullion. Ottorino Barassi had first come to the attention of the football world in 1934 with a highly prominent position organising the World Cup tournament held in his homeland of Italy. Before this Barassi had trained as an electronics engineer and it was while studying this in Cremona that his life-long passion for football was ignited. Having played, he then refereed at regional level before becoming the football correspondent for “La Provincia di Cremona.” Hence forth he entered sports administration. In 1925 he was elected Vice-President of the AIA (Italian Referees’ Association), from 1930 to 1932 he was President of the Italian Rugby Federation, and the following year he joined the FIGC (Italian F.A.) appointed by General Giorgio Vaccaro for the role of Secretary of the Federal Directory, specifically with the task of managing the organisation of the 1934 World Cup. As a prominent official of the FIGC he initiated a series of reforms (“Lodo Barassi") to streamline and bring about a properly organised structure to the Italian football pyramid at all levels and in all regions of Italy. After the fall of the Regime and the reconstitution of democratic institutions, even sport, despite a war still ongoing in the country, began to organise its activity again. On 4 December 1944 Giulio Onesti, President of CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee) appointed Ottorino Barassi as Regent of the FIGC; and on 15th May 1946 the Assembly elected Barassi as Presidente - a position he was to hold for 12 years. Barassi was also very active at international level and in 1952 he became a member of the FIFA Executive Committee. From that moment he began working to establish a European football governing body. On the initiative of the Italian, French and Belgian federations, UEFA was founded on 15 June 1954 in Basel with 25 national federations becoming affiliated. The Organisation set up its headquarters in Paris where it would remain until 1959, then moving to Bern. Barassi was also responsible for the new headquarters of the FIGC in Rome in Via Gregorio Allegri. After demolishing a residential villa, in 1952 work began on the construction of the six-storey building which, four years later, would be inaugurated. It has always been the case in sport that it is a results-driven business. Despite his tremendous contribution to Italian football and sport, Barassi paid a heavy personal price when the Italian national team was beaten 2-1 by Northern Ireland in Belfast on 15th January 1958. This result meant that Italy failed to qualify for the 1958 World Cup Finals in Sweden. Barassi, however, did not quit the game in Italy and decided to return to football by running for President of the newly formed National Amateur League. He was elected and remained in the role until his death in 1971. The Barassi Cup, an Anglo-Italian amateur football tournament (1968 – 1976) was to bear his name. He also developed amateur tournaments at Regional and Junior levels. In 2011 Ottorino Barassi was posthumously inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame. Ottorino Barassi's granddaughter, his only living relative, remarks "In regards to him football was his life. His inclusion in the Hall of Fame is richly deserved for dedication, especially as his early career was in challenging circumstances during the Fascismo reign and the Second World War. Although he officiated at the highest levels of the sport with FIFA and FIGC, he never lost his passion for football at its grass roots. According to Guinness World Records, 173,850 paid spectators crammed into Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium on July 16, 1950, to watch host Brazil take on Uruguay. However, it is believed the attendance was as high as 199,000 or 210,000 unofficially. Brazil had been so heavily favoured to win that a set of winner's medals engraved with the Brazilian players' names before the game ended could not be presented. Jules Rimet himself presented the FIFA World Cup trophy to the Uruguayan team on the field, without a formal ceremony or speech.

Pele’s 1958 World Cup winner’s medal is one of them. On paper, it is a medal. A Continental gold medal from a football tournament in Sweden. Beautiful, rare and valuable, obviously, but still a medal. Then you remember who wore it. A 17-year-old from Bauru, Brazil, who arrived at the World Cup carrying a knee injury and left as the most exciting young footballer the sport had ever seen. This was not the older Pele, the ambassador, the statue, the man whose name had already become shorthand for football greatness. This was Pele before the myth had fully formed. He didn’t even start the tournament as the central figure. He had a knee problem, and at 17 he was still, in theory, a kid. He came into the side against the USSR on the 15th June and changed everything, Brazil winning 2-0. His next match was against Wales and with him scoring, made him the youngest scorer in World Cup history, while his goals in the later rounds helped turn Brazil from contenders into champions. By the final, he was not just playing, he was performing and announcing himself to the world. The final that created a legend. On 29th of June 1958, Brazil faced Sweden at the Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm. Pele was 17 years and 249 days old. He scored twice and Brazil won 5-2. His first goal has become one of those moments that still feels outrageous decades later. He controlled the ball, lifted it over a defender and finished with the confidence of someone who had no fear and had been doing this all his life. His second came late, a header that sealed Brazil’s first world title and confirmed what everyone had been watching. Pele was the youngest goalscorer in a World Cup final, while Brazil’s 5-2 win over Sweden gave the country its first World Cup. Then came the image after the whistle. Pele crying on the pitch, held aloft by teammates twice his age. A child, really, carrying a nation’s footballing future around his neck in the form of a small gold medal. Pele would of course go on to win the World Cup again in 1962 and 1970, becoming the only player to win the tournament three times. Three times reaching the top of the sport’s biggest stage. Nobody else has done it and this medal from Sweden was the first. That is what makes it so powerful. It is not just part of Pele’s story. It’s the start of the Pele story as the world came to know it. Before 1958, he was a phenomenal young talent from Brazil. After 1958, he was Pele. He became universal. A footballer recognised by people who did not watch football. The kind of fame that only a handful of sportspeople ever reach. Modern football has global stars everywhere, but Pele was the first footballer to feel truly global in that way. The tournament that changed everything. To understand why this medal matters, you have to understand the World Cup it came from. The 1958 tournament was not the polished, global, hyper-produced monster we know today. It was hosted in Sweden, still the only World Cup ever staged in a Nordic country, and football was operating in a very different world. Then there was Brazil. They did not even unleash Pele and Garrincha properly until the final group game against the Soviet Union. Once they did, the tournament shifted. Brazil beat the USSR 2-0, then edged Wales 1-0 in the quarter-final thanks to Pele’s first World Cup goal. In the semi-final against France, he scored a hat-trick as Brazil won 5-2. By the final, Sweden had the home crowd, the opening goal and the occasion. Brazil went behind after four minutes, equalised quickly through Vava, then took control. The South Americans won 5-2, claiming their first World Cup, and Pele scored twice. Not just a competition Brazil won, but a moment when football began to look different. The old world was still there: battered players staying on, odd formats, simultaneous kick-offs, tiny squads and heavy pitches. But the future had arrived too, wearing yellow, playing with joy, and making the biggest stage in the sport look like a playground. Football history in one object. The first gold medal from the career of football’s first global king.

Gordon Banks: Continental gold 1966 World Cup Winners medal, the obverse inscribed FIFA, the reverse inscribed WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP JULES RIMET CUP IN ENGLAND 1966, in original fitted case England started the 1966 competition as one of the favorites, due partly to the fact that the tournament was held on home soil, and began their group qualifying games with a 0-0 draw against Uruguay. In the two remaining group qualifying matches England defeated Mexico and France 2-0 in both games. In the quarter-final match against Argentina Geoff Hurst scored the only goal of an explosive match thirteen minutes from the end. England's opponents in the semi-final were Portugal who had the wonderfully gifted Eusebio in their side. In a very entertaining match, England were worthy 2-1 winners. In the final, played on 30th July 1966 before a crowd of just under 100,000, Haller scored for West Germany in the thirteenth minute, but six minutes later Geoff Hurst scored his country's equaliser. For the best part of the next hour, neither side dominated the match but with twelve minutes remaining Hurst had an optimistic shot at goal which spun up in the air for Martin Peters to knock it home for what would appear to have been the winning goal. However, with seconds remaining, a hotly disputed free-kick from West Germany found its way across the England goal and Weber knocked the ball into the net for a dramatic equaliser which took the match into extra-time. After ten minutes of extra-time, England scored their third, and without doubt, the most controversial goal that has featured in any football match. Alan Ball chased a long ball towards the corner flag and pulled it back for Hurst, who shot from the edge of the six-yard box with the ball crashing against the underside of the bar. The ball bounced down and then upwards and out of the goal area. Roger Hunt could possibly have knocked the ball in the net, but he turned away raising his hands in jubilation, convinced that the ball had crossed the line. The ball was then cleared for a corner without a 'goal' being given and the Swiss referee Gottfried Dienst ran over to consult the Soviet linesman, Tofik Bakhramov who awarded the goal. This goal is still argued about today and film evidence of the match is totally inconclusive. However, in the last minute, the match was finally settled when England's captain, Bobby Moore, found Geoff Hurst in the centre circle with a long pass. Hurst then set off on one of his long runs and with the immortal words of match commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme 'and there are some people on the pitch. Gordon Banks blue airtex No.1 England v. Brazil “Save of The Century” match worn shirt, 1970, Umbro, OSM, with crew-neck collar and embroidered cloth badge Gordon Banks’ save of the century shirt: the blue jersey from the day England met the future. Some football shirts are remembered for the player who wore them and some are remembered for the match. Very few are remembered for one movement of one hand in one split second though. Gordon Banks’ blue England goalkeeper shirt from the 1970 World Cup game against Brazil belongs in that final category. This is not just a shirt worn by England’s greatest goalkeeper. It’s the shirt from the save . The one against Pele. The one that has been replayed, slowed down, mythologised and argued over for more than half a century. The shirt is attached to one of the most famous goalkeeping moments in football history. The save. The move itself is almost too perfect. Carlos Alberto releases Jairzinho down the right. Jairzinho gets away and clips the ball towards the back post. Pele rises and heads it down with exactly the kind of conviction that makes forwards start celebrating before the net has even moved. By his own account, Pele thought he had scored. Years later, in tribute to Banks, he said he had hit the header exactly where he wanted and was ready to celebrate before Banks appeared in his view “like a kind of blue phantom”. Banks somehow reads the bounce off the hard Mexican surface, throws himself across his goal, reaches with his right hand and diverts the ball over the bar. The ball doesn’t just get saved. It gets lifted away from its destiny. BBC commentator David Coleman’s famous reaction was beautifully simple: “What a save. Gordon Banks.” Sometimes commentary doesn’t need poetry. Sometimes a man just has to say the obvious because everyone watching can see what has happened. The best part is that Banks, typically, later played it down. He called it lucky. Goalkeepers are a strange breed. They can produce the most athletic movement seen by humanity and then shrug as though they have just successfully opened a difficult jar. But Banks knew the detail behind it. He had noticed in training that the ball bounced differently on the hard Mexican pitches, kicking up higher than it would in England. That observation helped him judge the save. It was instinct, yes, but it was also preparation. It’s rare, obviously. It’s linked to Banks, one of England’s 1966 heroes. It is tied to Pele, the most recognisable footballer in history. It comes from a World Cup match between two of the game’s great football nations. The phrase “save of the century” is not just a lazy headline. It’s stuck because the moment has everything a great save needs. The cross is perfect, the header is perfect, the bounce is evil and the goalkeeper is moving the wrong way - until suddenly he isn’t. And the striker denied is Pele. That last part matters more than people like to admit. A great save becomes greater when you know who has been stopped. If Banks makes that save from someone less famous, it’s still brilliant. But because it’s Pele, in 1970, wearing yellow, in that Brazil team, it becomes something mythological. Pele himself helped keep the story alive. After Banks died in 2019, the Brazilian spoke warmly not only of the save but of the friendship that followed. He described Banks as a goalkeeper with magic and a kind man, which might be the most Pele way possible of saying: “I still can’t believe he saved that.” Football creates rivalries, but it also creates strange little bonds. Banks and Pele were forever connected by a goal that never happened. England beat Czechoslovakia to reach the quarter-finals, where they faced West Germany. Banks was missing through illness, Peter Bonetti came in, and England lost 3-2 after extra time having led 2-0. No final against Brazil. No chance to defend the crown properly. No rematch between the team of 1966 and the team of 1970. No rematch between Banks and Pele. That’s why the Brazil game has taken on even more meaning. England lost it, but they proved they could live with Brazil. They gave the eventual champions their closest and most uncomfortable match of the tournament. And Banks gave them the moment everyone remembers. This is the shirt worn by Gordon Banks when he produced what may still be the most famous save in World Cup history. It’s attached to Pele, to Brazil 1970, to England as defending champions, to colour television, to Mexico, to the passing of an era. It is a piece of football’s memory. That is what BUDDS are offering, not just a blue goalkeeper shirt but the shirt from the save . The one that helped define both men. For Banks, it became the moment that followed him even beyond winning the World Cup in 1966. He once said people would not remember him for winning the World Cup, but for that save. That sounds ridiculous until you realise he was probably right. For Pele, it became the goal he didn’t score that people use to ask him about.

Silvio Gazzaniga an original pencil drawing of the World Cup, signed by the artist, 49 x 36cm, unframed With Brazil winning the Jules Rimet Trophy for the third time in 1970 in Mexico, FIFA rules dictated that Brazil would keep the Rimet Cup in perpetuity. FIFA, therefore, needed another trophy for subsequent World Cups. Fifty three designs were summitted by artists from all over the world and Silvio, Gazzaniga's was the winning design. The new cup represents the joy, exultation and greatness of the athlete at the moment of victory, two stylised figures that hold the world aloft. Closeted away in his studio situated in the artists quarter of Milan, near the Brera Academy and Sforzesco Castle, Gazzaniga began work immediately. Given the difficulties involved in preparing simple sketches to show the fluidity of the design, he also created a plasticine model and a plaster cast. The uncertainty involved in creating a design without first having reached a formal agreement also stood him in good stead. 53 designs were submitted from 25 nations worldwide, but after experiencing the sight, feel, symbolic beauty and photogenic quality of Silvio Gazzaniga's design, FIFA gave their seal of approval. The Cup was immediately cast in gold and officially adopted by FIFA in January 1972. Gazzaniga created the world's most sought after football trophy Silvio Gazzaniga was born in Milan in1921. During the avant-garde period of the 1940s, he attended the "Humanitarian School of Applied Art and the High School of Art, specialising as a goldsmith and jeweller. After the War, he started his career as a sculptor of medals, cups and decorations and at the end of 1953 began to collaborate with, Bertoni Milano (known today as GDE Bertoni), as artistic director and master sculptor. He went on to create other important football trophies, Riding on the wave of this great international success, the artist continued to create other important football trophies, including UEFA Cup trophy 1972 and the UEFA Super Cup trophy 1973. He also produced the Baseball World Cup trophy in 2001.

Argentina match worn ‘Hand of God’ goalkeepers shirt, 1986, Umbro, with crew-neck collar and embroidered three lion badge inscribed FIFA WORLD CUP MEXICO '86 The above shirt was worn by Peter Shilton in the controversial ‘Hand of God’ 1986 World Cup quarter-final match against Argentina played 22nd June at the Aztec Stadium, Argentina defeating England 2-1 The Peter Shilton match worn shirt from the Argentina v England 1986 World Cup Quarter-Final is of truly extraordinary importance. It was the shirt worn in a match that produced the most controversial goal in football history, the Argentinean goalscorer Maradona citing divine intervention through the "Hand of God" The 2nd half of the match will be remembered eternally for two moments that perfectly define the flawed genius of the Argentine footballer Diego Maradona. In the 51st minute Maradona passed the ball to Valdano and then then staying onside raced into the penalty area for the Valdoano's return centre which was deflected by England's Steve Hodge high across the face of the goal. England goalkeeper and captain came off his line to punch the ball to safety, but was only to feel fresh air as the diminutive Maradona seemingly outjumped the airborne goalkeeper and the ball nestled in the England net. Nowadays the goal would have been disallowed with referee's benefiting from the assistance of VAR technology, as TV playback confirmed clearly that Maradona had illegally used his left hand to push the ball into the goal. Referee Ali Bin Nasser is on record as saying that from the angle he was positioned with many players in his sight line, he did not see the incident. He did however look towards his red flag linesman, Bogdan Dochev, but the Bulgarian was making his way back to the halfway line for the game to restart. Ali Bin Nasser had no choice but to allow the goal to stand. Under four minutes later Maradona displayed the unrivalled genius of his ability as a footballer. He scored a virtuoso goal that in 1999 was voted Goal of the 20th Century in a FIFA poll. Eleven touches and eleven seconds of greatness weaved over 68 metres of pitch. British match reporter Mike Payne described the goal: "To say he ran rings round England would be too simple a description of a goal that stands comparison with the very best scored anywhere at any time. Running with the ball at his feet from inside his own half, Maradona drew England players to him like a spider luring his prey. Peter Reid, Peter Beardsley, Kenny Sansom, Terry Butcher and Terry Fenwick all came into his web and were left in a tangle behind him as he accelerated past their attempted tackles. It was then Maradona versus Shilton again, this time on the ground. He sold the goalkeeper an outrageous dummy that left Shilton scrambling for a shot that was never made, and then nonchalantly prodded the ball into the empty net for a goal of breath-taking beauty. It was a moment of magnificence that sweetened the sour taste left by Maradona's first goal. Well, almost!" In the 81st minute England were given hope when the excellent John Barnes, on as a substitute, did superbly well to allow himself to cross from the left and for Gary Lineker to head home from close range. Alas, it was not to be the start of a glorious revival. Argentina won the match and would progress to the final where they would beat West Germany to be crowned World Champions. Lineker's goal, however, his sixth of the tournament secured the Englishman the prestigious Golden Boot trophy.
